About Chris Dilworth
Professional Experience in the State of Maine
I have been practicing law since 1985, the first two years as an Assistant District Attorney, the balance as a solo practitioner in the Portland area. I have handled a wide variety of work, representing individuals and small businesses in areas such as civil disputes, real estate transactions, debt collection, and criminal defense. I have extensive trial experience, including Maine District, Superior, Probate and Supreme Courts, as well as Federal District Court and the First Circuit Court of Appeals. I have tried approximately 500 District Court cases, thirty Superior Court cases, and a dozen Federal District Court cases. In addition, I have argued several appeals before the State Supreme Court and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
Personal Experience in Maine Health Care Law
Over the past couple of years my focus has shifted to private health insurance coverage and consumer rights. This was triggered by a personal experience with my health insurance carrier.
One of my daughters needed extensive residential care in an out of state program. The treatment takes about ten weeks to complete. My insurance company cut off all benefits after fourteen days, leaving my 14 year old daughter without care, halfway across the country. We had no prior notice. The decision was made on a Monday afternoon during the school year. It was a heartless decision, based on greed, and done in a sloppy and unprofessional manner. My wife and I spent six months fighting this decision, which was eventually overturned. I represented myself and in the process I became thoroughly familiar with Maine health care law, including consumer's rights.
